Just this week, the number of billionaires in South Carolina may have doubled overnight — at least before taxes — after a lottery ticket sold in the state of South Carolina won the $1.537 billion Mega Millions lottery jackpot. A lot of conversation has stirred since reaching the billion dollar mark.
My real estate office, where I work part time, decided to each contribute and pool some money as a sort of fun team unifying exercise. This caught me thinking again about evangelism, and the the golden calf in this country, the American Dream. As I was listening to conversation buzzing around the jackpot, it's amazing how many people had a plan about what they would do with this money that they "might win" but have never thought about the state of their soul and eternity. As I was talking with people in our community about what they would do if they won, many said they would tithe to their church, give to charity, and then had a long list of paying off the house, buy a new car, put money away for a rainy day and investing money in business enterprises.
It's easy to say what you would do with a billion dollars. But we already have something far greater than a billion dollars, we have been given a soul and life! Every image bearing sinner has a soul. What are we doing with our life, time, energy, opportunities, relationships and work? What are we doing with the gift of the Gospel, the very power of God?
More than a Powerball ticket, or Mega millions or whatever it's called (I have no idea how it works) people don't need more money. They don't need a better job or better food or a better spouse or a better income. These are all things people quickly grow discontent with because of sin. The Bible teaches that those who don't know God seek after these things. What people need is to hear about the love of Jesus Christ through the Gospel's call to simply and truly repent of their sin and believe in Jesus Christ. It is simple, they need to hear the Truth of God's Word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Give them that! Give them Life. Give them Christ the Shepherd who longs to lead His people into the path of Life.
I am a great sinner saved by far greater grace. God has blessed me with a wonderful family and a beautiful Gospel congregation at Twin Lakes Bible Church.
